Ribbon Flowers by Sarah Hill

Ribon flowers are great accessories in the theatre (and in real life!) for hair, bouquets, broaches, cute details on cardigans, hats, baby clothes, and more.  They’re easy and fast to make, as well as relatively cheap.

The first step is to get the kind of ribbon you want.

RIBBON FLOWER 1
You wrap the ribbon around your finger, slipping your finger out so that the ribbon stays spiraled:

And make a small loop, hot gluing the end to itself.

From there you just keep spiraling the ribbon around your finger, slipping it out, and wrap the spiraled ribbon around itself, hot gluing as much as needed, until your ‘flower’ reaches its desired size.

RIBBON FLOWER 2
For this flower, make sure you start with a square of felt.

Using a 1 inch or thicker ribbon, fold it in half and place hot glue on the outside of the fold.

Slowly wrap the ribbon in a circular motion around the felt, gluing all edges to it.  You must remember to create folds and divets in the ribbon by placing the ribbon unevenly at times.

POLYESTER FLOWER
Cut out circles of polyester fabric, making sure each is smaller than the last.

Using a lighter, burn the edges so the material’s edges are melted, stopping the fabric from fraying, and causing the material to bend up.

Place all circles on top of one another, hot gluing or sewing in place.

As desired, add embellishments in the center.

Hot glue to a pin, headband, etc.
